Notable Innovation

01.
Low-voltage electron beam control of conductive state at a complex-oxide interface

What it is: a method that uses an ultra-low-voltage electron beam directed at the surface of an insulating layer to selectively and locally switch the electronic/conductive state at the interface between oxide layers (a complex-oxide interface). In practice the beam modifies the surface (and thus the interfacial properties) so regions of the interface can be switched between distinct electronic states (e.g., insulating vs conductive) using very low electron energies.

02.
IGF2BP3 functional alterations and overexpression as a marker for cancer diagnosis and therapeutic response to IGF1R inhibitors

What it is: researchers discovered and claimed biomarkers tied to alterations upstream of the IGF2BP3 gene that lead to elevated IGF2BP3 expression. The patent covers methods and compositions that detect those alterations/overexpression and use them both for more sensitive cancer diagnosis and for selecting patients likely to respond to IGF-1 receptor (IGF1R) inhibitors. In short: a genetic/protein signature that helps (a) identify cancers with high IGF2BP3 activity and (b) predict whether IGF1R-targeting drugs will work in a given patient.

Method and apparatus for adaptive page migration and pinning for oversubscribed irregular applications

What it is: a hardware/software method to dynamically decide when to move (migrate) memory pages between “far” memory and “near” memory (for example, between off-package DRAM and on-package memory close to a GPU) in heterogeneous systems. The approach counts accesses to units of data, computes a dynamically changing access threshold (not a fixed static threshold), and when usage exceeds that threshold, migrates the data to the near memory and can pin it there.
