In 2020, alumna Dr. Jennifer Doudna (Class of 1985) received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for co-inventing the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology. This historic achievement brought global recognition to Pomona College, highlighting its strong foundation in scientific education and research mentorship.
In 2008, Pomona College became one of the first colleges in the U.S. to implement a no-loan financial aid policy, ensuring that admitted students have their full financial need met through grants and scholarships, not loans. This achievement reflects Pomona’s dedication to accessibility and socioeconomic diversity.
Pomona College played a key role in the creation and growth of The Claremont Colleges Consortium beginning in 1925, which now includes institutions like Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Pitzer Colleges. This model of shared resources among small, specialized colleges has been recognized internationally as a pioneering approach to higher education collaboration.
In 2018, faculty and students collaborated on the creation of a Digital Ethics and Data Responsibility Model, used to study social media behavior and misinformation. The framework became a teaching tool in digital literacy programs and was shared with partner institutions in the Claremont Colleges consortium.
In 2015, Pomona College chemistry researchers implemented green chemistry techniques to reduce hazardous waste in labs. They pioneered eco-friendly synthesis methods and established one of the first undergraduate-level green chemistry laboratory standards in the U.S., influencing other small colleges to adopt sustainable lab practices.
Pomona alumna Jennifer Doudna co-developed the revolutionary CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing system in 2012. This technology allows scientists to precisely modify DNA sequences in living organisms, paving the way for breakthroughs in genetic medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. For this invention, Doudna received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Pomona’s Environmental Analysis faculty developed advanced data visualization and mapping tools in the early 2000s to track environmental changes, air quality, and sustainability metrics in California. These systems were among the first used in liberal arts research for integrating real-time environmental data with student projects.
In the 1990s, faculty from Pomona’s Cognitive Science Department designed early prototypes of interactive learning software to study how humans process language and memory. These innovations helped shape modern research methods used in cognitive science and AI-driven education models.
