The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) was officially established in 1948, following decades of educational efforts by the Marist Brothers in the region, who had been active since 1900.
The “Pontifical” title was granted to PUCRS in 1950, two years after its founding. This title signifies the university’s formal recognition and connection to the Catholic Church, reflecting its roots in Marist educational traditions and its alignment with ecclesiastical values.
PUCRS’s roots trace back to the founding of the Nossa Senhora do Rosário School by the Marist Brothers in Porto Alegre. The institution began offering college-level courses in 1931 with the creation of the School of Political and Economic Sciences. Between 1940 and 1947, additional schools were established, eventually leading to the university's formal founding in 1948.
