Portland State University History

Portland State University began as a post-secondary educational institution for World War II veterans in 1946. Over the next two decades, it grew into a four-year college and was granted university status in 1969.

Portland State University Campuses

    The Portland State University campus spans a 50-acre (20 ha) area of southwest downtown Portland known as the University District. The campus is bounded to the north by Clay Street, to the east by Fourth Avenue, to the south by Interstate 405, and to the west by 12th Avenue. SW Broadway runs through the center of campus, connecting the university's central buildings: Lincoln Hall, Cramer Hall, Smith Memorial Student Union, Fariborz Maseeh Hall, and Shattuck Hall; Cramer Hall, Smith Memorial, and Fariborz Maseeh Hall are connected by tunnels on the basement levels, as well as sky bridges on the upper levels, allowing students access between buildings without using street sidewalk.

     The Portland State University Library strives to align its mission and values with those of the University, while also articulating a distinct vision for the Library's future. The mission of the Portland State University Library is to promote the intellectual vitality, knowledge, and creativity of the Portland State University community.
