Established in 1887 as Working Men’s College, the RMIT University is an Australian public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. The university also has campuses in the Melbourne metropolitan area which are located in the suburbs of Brunswick and Bundoora. Outside Australia, it has a presence in Asia and Europe. In Asia, it has two branch campuses in Vietnam which are located in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and maintains teaching partnerships in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. In Europe, it has a coordinating centre in Barcelona, Spain.

The university comprises of 3 colleges, each comprising of various schools: College of Business (School of Accounting; School of Business IT and Logistics; School of Economics, Finance and Marketing; School of Graduate Business and Law; School of Management; and School of Vocational Business Education); College of Design and Social Context (School of Architecture and Design; School of Art; School of Education; School of Fashion and Textiles; School of Global, Urban and Social Studies; School of Media and Communication; and School of Property, Construction and Project Management); and College of Science, Engineering and Health (RMIT School of Engineering; RMIT School of Health and Biomedical Sciences; RMIT School of Science; RMIT School of Vocational Engineering, Health and Sciences.

The total number of students enrolled at the university is more than 83,000 of which over 44,000 are enrolled in the undergraduate level. The student to faculty ratio at RMIT is 17:1.

RMIT focuses on applied research as well as outcome-related research and consultancy services. It has extensive partnerships with government and industry and mainly focuses its research in the areas of design, technology, health, globalization and sustainability. Its programs in arts and design are ranked highest in Australia.
