The 56-acre Park Avenue campus is complemented by the nearby West Campus, creating a total campus footprint of over 100 acres.
Sacred Heart University employs a holistic review process for freshman admission, evaluating each applicant beyond just their grades. The admissions team considers a range of factors, including high school academic performance in college-level, honors, and AP/IB courses, a letter of recommendation, extracurricular activities, volunteerism, and personal qualities. The university is test-optional, meaning students may choose whether to submit SAT or ACT scores as part of their application.
International students must submit high school transcripts and proof of English proficiency through exams such as Duolingo (minimum 110), IELTS (minimum 6.5), or TOEFL (minimum 80). Upon admission, students are required to pay an enrollment deposit and submit a current passport along with a recent bank letter showing sufficient funds to cover the first full year of study at SHU. Students on an F-1 student visa are not permitted to enroll in fully online programs.
SHU offers a comprehensive range of financial aid options, including merit-based scholarships, need-based grants, activity-based awards, and endowed scholarships. Merit scholarships range from $6,000 to $20,000 and are automatically considered for all new students based on their high school transcript; a separate application is not required. These scholarships are renewable for four years of full-time study, provided the student maintains the required cumulative GPA for their specific award.
SHU provides a variety of on-campus housing options, with ten residential halls housing thousands of students. Options include traditional dormitories and apartment-style suites, such as the 64 suite-style apartments in Elie Wiesel and Pier Giorgio Frassati Halls, which house four or five students each and include living rooms and kitchens. The Scholars Commons is designed specifically for sophomore students, offering apartment-style living with amenities like fitness facilities, laundry, and 24-hour security.
Yes, international students may be eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which is off-campus work authorization for internships or field experiences that are an integral part of their academic program. To qualify, the job must be directly related to the student's major and they must receive academic credit for the experience. It is crucial to note that participating in 12 months or more of full-time CPT will make a student ineligible for post-completion OPT.
International students on an F-1 visa are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which provides up to 12 months of full-time work experience in their field of study after completing each degree level (bachelor's, master's, or doctorate). For students with degrees in approved STEM fields, an additional 24-month OPT extension is available, allowing for up to 36 months of post-graduation work authorization in the United States.
