Saint Joseph’s University History

Saint Joseph's University was established as Saint Joseph's College in 1851, founded by the Society of Jesus. It is named after Jesus' earthly father, Saint Joseph.

 Every year, as in almost 9,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students attend Saint Joseph's University. Over 135 undergraduate programmes, 77 graduate programmes, 9 adult learner programmes, and experiential learning opportunities such as cooperative education, internships, clinical rotations, Summer Scholars, and an Ed.D. In Educational Leadership are available at the university. It is home to 14 centres and institutes, such as the Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support and the Pedro Arrupe, S.J., Center for Business Ethics.

Saint Joseph’s University Campuses

The campus of Saint Joseph's University, also known as Hawk Hill, is located on City Avenue, which connects the university to the western edge of Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township. The main campus of Saint Joseph's University is located on the Philadelphia side of City Avenue between Cardinal and Overbrook Avenues and 52nd Street, and was the university's original location when it relocated to City Avenue in 1927. Barbelin Hall, which opened in 1927, is Saint Joseph's most recognizable structure. The Gothic architecture of the hall is well-known, particularly the gargoyles that mark the Barbelin Quadrangle (or Barbelin Courtyard) and the tall, four-spired bell tower that can be seen from miles away. The majority of academic buildings, first-year residence halls, and campus houses are located on Saint Joseph's University's main campus. The main academic halls are Barbelin (College of Arts and Sciences), Mandeville (Haub School of Business), Bellarmine, Post, and Science Center. Campus houses are a prominent feature of the main campus, serving as departmental offices for fine arts (Boland Hall), communication studies (Bronstein Hall), and the president and provost (Regis Hall), as well as housing for first-year and upperclassmen.

     The Francis A. Drexel Library is main library of Saint Joseph's University. The Francis A. Drexel Library and Post Learning Commons is your hub for research, collaboration, and scholarly activities. The Francis A. Drexel Library's mission is to promote lifelong learning, academic integrity, and the highest level of student and faculty scholarship possible. The library strives to make relevant, high-quality information sources and collections easily accessible. The Saint Joseph's University library, in collaboration with faculty, supports and enhances curricular programmes and provides instruction in the skilled use and comprehension of information. Saint Joseph’s University Housing services

  Various residence halls at Saint Joseph's University provide housing services. Approximately 80% of Saint Joseph's students live on campus. Residence halls, apartments, townhouses, and campus houses are all options for housing. Traditional residence halls (McShain Hall and Villiger Hall), suite-style residence halls (Sourin Residence Center and LaFarge Residence Center), and campus houses are available to first-year students (Tara and Quirk Halls). The university's newest residence, Villiger Hall, opened in August 2012. The main campus houses all first-year housing options. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors have the option of living in one of several campus houses or apartments. In addition, the university plans to open a new residence hall for students on the Autism Spectrum by fall 2022.

Saint Joseph’s University Medical services

       Students' health services are available at Saint Joseph’s University. Saint Joseph’s University is pleased to offer healthcare services to its student and employee communities. Samford’s on-campus Health Center, in collaboration with MedHelp, is staffed by a Physician and a Nurse Practitioner during regular operating hours, and students and staff have access to MedHelp's five Birmingham locations after hours and on weekends. All degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in six or more credit hours, as well as international, graduate, and PhD/EdD students enrolled in one or more credit hours, must enrol or waive health insurance at FirstStudent.com on an annual basis.

  Saint Joseph’s University students are encouraged to choose from over 100 student clubs to supplement their co-curricular and curricular experiences. Student organisations receive assistance, leadership training, and resources from the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement. Saint Joseph’s University sports and fitness

   The campus recreation department provides sports and fitness services at Saint Joseph's University. On the Hawk Hill Campus, the O'Pake Recreation Center serves as the central hub of fitness and recreation for the Saint Joseph's University community. O'Pake Recreation Center provided the following services: Strength centre (free weights, selectorized machines and accessories) Cardio equipment (treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, and rowers), functional training equipment (kettlebells, battle ropes, and resistance bands, dumbbells, and slam balls courtesy of Kettlebell Kings & Living) Group exercise facility, There are two indoor basketball courts.

The Maguire pool, located in the Athletic Center, is an eight-lane, 25-meter saltwater pool, changing rooms and much more.

  Counseling and Psychological Services at Saint Joseph's University provide health and well-being services. Counseling and Psychological Services, located on Hawk Hill in Merion Gardens and on the University City campus in Whitecar Hall, promotes Saint Joseph's University students' psychological well-being through a variety of therapeutic interventions and outreach programmes. The delivery of these services is guided by "transformative learning goals" and takes place in a campus environment that promotes academic, social, physical, and spiritual well-being.
