The college is a liberal arts college, established specifically to educate women in the year 1844. The founders of the college were Sisters of the Holy Cross. Initially it started as Saint Marys Academy and then grew to be Saint Marys College. It is known to be the first women's college that was established in Notre Dame.

Saint Marys College of Indiana Campus is based at Notre Dame, Indiana. The campus is spread across 278 acres that consists of many ancient buildings with great design and architecture. The most famous building in the campus is Le Mans Hall that is also one of the oldest buildings.
