Sarah Lawrence College History

Sarah Lawrence College was founded on the grounds of real estate mogul William Van Duzer Lawrence's estate in Westchester County and named after his wife, Sarah Bates Lawrence. The Sarah Lawrence College was founded with the intention of providing women with education in the arts and humanities. The college's early curriculum included "productive leisure," in which students were required to work for eight hours per week in fields such as modelling, shorthand, typewriting, makeup application, and gardening.

Students take courses in four areas of study: the Creative Arts (writing, music, dance, theatre, film, and the plastic arts, such as painting, printmaking, drawing, and sculpture); history and the social sciences (e.g., anthropology, economics, political science, and sociology); the humanities (e.g., Asian studies, art history, film studies, languages, literature, philosophy, and religion); and natural science and mathematics (biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and mathematics).

The March 11, 2007, Washington Post article "The Cost of Bucking College Rankings" by Michele Tolela Myers, a former president of Sarah Lawrence College, brought national attention to criticism of college and university rankings, particularly their perceived impact on the college admissions process. Sarah Lawrence College dropped the requirement for SAT test scores for undergraduate applicants in 2003. In 2018, Forbes ranked it 133rd out of 660 military academies, national universities, and liberal arts colleges in its America's Top Colleges ranking. In the same year, Sarah Lawrence was ranked 144th in the liberal arts college category by Washington Monthly.

      Campus of Sarah Lawrence College Much of the 42-acre (17-hectare) Sarah Lawrence campus was originally part of the estate of the college's founder, William Van Duzer Lawrence, though the college's size has more than doubled since Lawrence bequeathed his estate to the college in 1926. The landscape is defined by dramatic outcroppings of exposed bedrock shaded by large oak and elm trees. Many of the older buildings are in the Tudor Revival architecture style, which was popular in the area in the early twentieth century, and many of the college's newer buildings attempt to update the same style.

 The Campbell Sports Center provides sports and fitness services to Sarah Lawrence College. All students, including our Division III athletes, can benefit from the Campbell Sports Center. Our 15 teams are made up of both recruited and walk-on athletes and are a great source of community.
