Shorter University History

Shorter University is a private university that is based in Rome, Georgia. The university is a Baptist university that was founded in the year 1873 as Cherokee Baptist Female College. In 1877, the college was renamed Shorter College after Alfred and Martha Shorter who contributed largely to the college. The college during that time was located close to Clock Tower Hill in downtown Rome. Initially, the college has only three departments: primary, preparatory, and collegiate. In 1910, the Shorter College moved to a new campus and in 1948, it welcomed male students for admission making it now a co-educational institution. In 2010, because of its growth over the years Shorter College changed its name to Shorter University. The university is a member of the NCAA Division II and Peach Belt Conference.
