In a major structural change, the Sibelius Academy joined with the Theatre Academy and the Academy of Fine Arts. Together, they formed the University of the Arts Helsinki, enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration in the arts.
The Academy was formally recognized as a university, granting it the authority to award doctoral degrees and conduct high-level research in music and the arts.
In 1980, the Sibelius Academy officially became part of the Finnish state university system. This transition provided more stability and public funding for its operations.
