Everything You Need to Know About Application Requirements at Smith College

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution. 

A strong undergraduate academic record is expected. 

Some graduate programs may require standardized exams (e.g. GRE) — though not all; applicants should check with the specific program. 

Required application materials generally include:

  • Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended 

  • Resume or curriculum vitae 

  • Statement of purpose or objectives for graduate study 

  • Writing sample or substantial academic paper for certain programs 

Some specific graduate programs (e.g. Master of Arts in Teaching — MAT) have additional requirements: a $60 application fee, letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc. 

Graduate / special program applications are managed through Smith’s Graduate & Special Programs portal. 

Deadlines vary by department / program. For example, biology graduate program has a deadline of January 15 for submitting all required materials. 

For the School for Social Work’s PhD program, candidates must hold a Master’s degree already.
