Southern Medical University History

Southern Medical University, formerly known as the First Military Medical University, affiliated with the People's Liberation Army of China, is a higher learning institution in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, China. It was founded in 1951 and in 1979 it became a major national university. The university, approved by the PLA's State Council and Central Military Commission, came under Guangdong Province jurisdiction in August 2004, after which it was renamed Southern Medical University.

This university offers Bachelor and Master's courses in clinical medicine, Western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, economics, and fields related to medicine. At the basic level, students are also taught English (for Chinese students) and Chinese Mandarin (for foreign students). The World Health Organization and India's Medical Council recognize Southern Medical University. The university is a wealthy haven for medical research and development. SMU now has 99 master's degree programs, 10 primary disciplines with 75 doctoral degree programs, and 7 mobile post-doctoral research centres.

Southern Medical University Campuses

Southern Medical University is located on the foothills of Guangzhou's picturesque Baiyun Mountain. The main campus, along with its southern campus in Guangzhou's southern suburb, covers almost one square kilometre of area. The first - class garden - like the university has been awarded, nourishing rows of green trees and bouquets of flowers blooming throughout the year on campuses. The university comprises 16 schools and colleges, including the Basic Medicine School, the School of Clinical Medicine, the School of Biomedical Engineering, the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the School of Public Health. The facilities of the university include a soccer ground, a ground for athletics, and a swimming pool. The library of the Southern Medical University has a collection of over 1 million volumes, as well as 2,300 periodicals from China and abroad.
