Former warlord and politician George Boley hails from Liberia. He belongs to the ethnic group known as the Krahn. Boley was temporarily imprisoned for his affiliations with opposition parties while serving as a junior minister in President William Tolbert's administration. On the morning of the military takeover that installed Samuel Doe in 1980, he was freed. Later, under President Doe, Boley was appointed Minister of Education and Minister of Presidential Affairs. He fled into exile in the US following Doe's assassination in September 1990, but the US government deported him in 2012 after he was charged with atrocities during the civil war, including leading armed child soldiers.
