SUNY Upstate Medical University is also known as the State University of New York Upstate Medical University and it is a well-known public medical school which is located in Syracuse, New York. The university is part of the SUNY system.
SUNY Upstate Medical University History
The current Upstate Medical University College of Medicine can trace its roots back to Geneva Medical College, which was established on September 15, 1834, as part of Geneva College, which is now known as Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Edward Cutbush, MD, the school's first dean, conceived of the medical school in Geneva, New York. As part of Governor Thomas E. Dewey's vision for Upstate New York, the State University of New York (SUNY) moved to add a medical center in Syracuse in 1950 and eventually acquired the College of Medicine from Syracuse University. Initially known as "SUNY Upstate Medical Center" and "SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse" (1986), the institution was renamed SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1999.
SUNY Upstate Medical University Programs, Courses, and Schools
Upstate is a doctoral and upper-division transfer university that is classified as a Special Focus Four-Year: Medical Schools and Centers, one of only 54 in the country that focuses solely on health care careers. This means that students applying to bachelor's programs must first complete the prerequisite courses (minimum 60 semester hours) at another college before beginning their junior and senior years of study at Upstate. Prior to enrollment in the graduate and post-graduate programs, students must have completed a bachelor's and/or master's degree.
The total number of students enrolled in was 1,592 (including 699 medical students) plus 619 residents and clinical fellows. Upstate has 623 full-time faculty members and 1,809 part-time and volunteer faculty members.

The main campus of SUNY Upstate Medical University is located in the University Hill neighborhood of Syracuse, New York, along Interstate 81. It houses Upstate University Hospital, the Institute for Human Performance, the Setnor Academic Building, the Central New York Gamma Knife Center, Jacobsen Hall, the Regional Oncology Center, Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, Weiskotten Hall, the Health Sciences Library, Silverman Hall, and the Geneva Tower residence hall. Geneva Tower provides housing services to SUNY Upstate Medical University. Geneva Tower offers students a variety of options, including one bedroom apartments, two-bedroom apartments, and a four-bedroom suite. The one-bedroom apartment can comfortably house one student or a married couple. Each apartment has one bedroom, a living room, a private bathroom, and a full kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, and oven/range.

Student Health Offices provide medical services at SUNY Upstate Medical University. The Student Health Office is located on the fourth floor of Jacobsen Hall, 175 Elizabeth Blackwell Street, Syracuse, NY. It is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Upstate Family Medicine (315-492-3400) provides after-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage. A physician, nurse practitioners, nurses, and administrative staff work in Student Health. The student will be seen by the nurse practitioner on a regular basis. Aside from this, the University Hospital Emergency Department provides emergency care. Indicate that you are an Upstate student and notify the Student Health Office the following business day. The Emergency Department charges will be billed to your health insurance.
