Swarthmore College, located in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, is a private liberal arts college. Swarthmore is a member of the Tri-College Consortium, which includes Bryn Mawr and Haverford College. Swarthmore also has a Quaker Consortium affiliation with the University of Pennsylvania, which allows students to cross-register for classes at all four institutions.
Swarthmore College History
Swarthmore College, founded in 1864 and holding its first classes in 1869, is one of the United States' earliest coeducational colleges. It was founded as a college "under the care of Friends, [and] at which an education equal to that of the best institutions of learning in our country may be obtained." Swarthmore had dropped its religious affiliation and became officially non-sectarian by 1906.

Swarthmore College provides over 600 courses per year in over 40 majors, including an ABET-accredited engineering program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in engineering. Swarthmore has 22 Division III Intercollegiate sports teams and competes in the Centennial Conference, a group of private colleges from Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Swarthmore was named the third-best liberal arts college in the country in 2019 by U.S. News & World Report, trailing Williams and Amherst and tied with Wellesley. Amherst, Williams, and Swarthmore are the only colleges to have received the number one liberal arts college ranking since the rankings' inception. Swarthmore College has been named the nation's top liberal arts college six times. Forbes magazine ranked Swarthmore 25th out of 650 colleges, universities, and service academies in its 2019 ranking.
Swarthmore ranked fourth in the United States among all institutions of higher learning in terms of the percentage of graduates who went on to earn Ph. D.s between 2002 and 2011.

Swarthmore College Campuses
Swarthmore College's campus spans 425 acres (1.72 km2) and is organized along a north-south axis anchored by Parrish Hall, which houses numerous administrative offices, student lounges, and two floors of student housing. The fourth floor houses the campus radio station WSRN-FM as well as The Phoenix, the weekly student newspaper. Many acres are wooded, with trails. Swarthmore College's campus has four libraries. Friends Historical Library, McCabe Library, Cornell Library, and Underhill Library McCabe Library, located near the heart of campus, houses the Humanities and Social Sciences collections, as well as Swarthmore's Special Collections, which include the College Archives, Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College Peace Collection, and the Rare Book Room.
