SLU is a long-standing, young university. It was established in 1977 from the agricultural, forestry, and veterinary university faculties, the Skinnskatteberg Forestry School, and the Skara Veterinary School. SLU commemorated its 40th anniversary in 2017 with a variety of events for the general public, employees, and students.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) needs upper secondary education completion and evidence of English competence, which is frequently equal to a high school diploma, for international students to be admitted as undergraduates. A proof of citizenship, an online application, and supporting papers demonstrating that you fulfill the particular admission requirements for your program of choice—which can differ depending on the course—are also required.
International students must complete an online application, meet English proficiency requirements (equivalent to English 6), demonstrate proof of a bachelor's degree equivalent to a Swedish kandidatexamen, and document program-specific requirements in order to be considered for a postgraduate program at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). A 900 SEK application fee is also required of non-EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals.
