Sweet Briar College

Sweet Briar College is an independent women's college in Sweet Briar, Virginia. It was founded in 1901 by Indiana Fletcher Williams in memory of her deceased daughter, Daisy.

Sweet Briar College History

Indiana Fletcher Williams founded Sweet Briar College in 1901 in memory of her deceased daughter, Daisy. The college formally opened its doors in 1906 and awarded the first B.A. degree in 1910.

Sweet Briar College Programs, Courses, and Schools

 Sweet Briar College has 17 majors, 21 minors, three pre-professional programs (pre-law, pre-medicine, and pre-veterinary), two certificate programs (arts management and equine studies), ten areas of teacher licensure, and one graduate degree. Undergraduate students at Sweet Briar College can earn a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, or a Bachelor of Science degree. It is the second women's college in the country to provide an ABET-accredited engineering degree. Sweet Briar College has a number of study abroad programs, the majority of which focus on foreign language, such as the Junior Year in France (JYF) program. Sweet Briar also provides academic fellowships and grants to current students.

Sweet Briar College Achievements/USP

Sweet Briar College's USP/Achievements include the establishment of its engineering program in 2005, one of only two ABET-accredited engineering programs at a women's college. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges has accredited the college to award Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Arts in teaching degrees.

Sweet Briar is known for its historic Georgian Revival architecture by Ralph Adams Cram, as well as its 3,250 acres (13.2 km2) of hills, forests, and fields.

The Sweet Briar College library is known as the Mary Helen Cochran Library. Mary Helen Cochran Library encourages the pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence by providing collections that support information needs and scholarly pursuits; spaces conducive to inquiry and learning; and services that enhance the Sweet Briar College learning and campus life experience. Housing services

Sweet Briar College housing services is provided by a variety of residences. Sweet Briar is a residential college, and almost all students live on campus. In the Green Village and Patterson House, upperclasswomen have access to seven standard dormitories as well as additional independent living options.

Medical services

  Sweet Briar College's medical services are provided by the medical center on campus. Five days a week, Sweet Briar provides on-site medical care. The clinic provides a number of services, including:

  • Strep, flu, pregnancy, and COVID testing
  • High blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes screenings
  • Minor burns, cuts, and sprains, as well as skin conditions such as eczema, athlete’s foot, acne, and other skin-related rashes.

Students clubs

There are over 50 student clubs and organisations at Sweet Briar College. Participation in Special Interest Clubs or media organisations is open to all students on campus, regardless of major or skill set. The Inter-club Council (ICC) governs special interest clubs and media organisations, which are funded by the Student Government Association.

Sweet Briar College's Office of Student Life is dedicated to empowering women to grow as leaders and individuals. Sports and Fitness

Fitness and Athletics Center at Sweet Briar College provides fitness and sports facilities. In the Upchurch Field House, the 53,000-square-foot FAC has racquetball and squash courts, a spinning room, and a multi-purpose event space. The Williams Gymnasium and the Prothro Natatorium, as well as locker rooms, aerobics, free-weight, and fencing rooms, are located in the FAC. In addition to providing for the requirements of the athletics department and offering as a wellness center for the entire Sweet Briar community, the FAC provides students with a place to study or watch TV in the Robertson Recreation Lounge, see a movie or lecture in the 1948 Theater, take a class in the Wood Multi-Purpose Room, or dine in the Houston Bistro. Potts's Lobby houses the Athletics Hall of Fame.

Health and Well-being 

The wellness center at Sweet Briar College provides health and well-being services. Sweet Briar College's new health clinic, located on the lower level of Memorial Chapel across from Grammer, is now open to students. You will be able to access all of the wonderful services that were previously available at the temporary health clinic location. Additionally, the centre has added a 24/7/365 general, non-emergency health care telehealth app that you can use in the new facility.

Residential Life

Sweet Briar's residential life creates and nurtures residential communities. Meaningful programs, workshops, and activities in the residence halls strengthen campus connections. Resident's advisors and resident coordinators are available in the residence halls to provide academic and emotional support, as well as to simply talk. Seven traditional residence halls and a modern apartment complex house students. Students from different classes are housed together in order to foster community and class bonding. Sweet Briar values the enhanced educational experience provided by living on campus for students to live and learn together.

Part time jobs

Sweet Briar College allows students to work part-time while studying. Students are permitted to work no more than 20 hours per week. All students are eligible to work on campus, but students who qualify for need-based assistance are given first priority. These students are given a campus student employment form, which they must fill out and return to the Financial Aid Office.

Student Safety

Sweet Briar College's Department of Campus Safety is housed in The Florence Elston Inn & Conference Center. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Campus Safety Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All security concerns, criminal offenses, accidents, and requests for assistance should be reported to Campus Safety as soon as possible. Officers are in charge of a variety of tasks, such as developing crime prevention programs, taking crime and accident reports, initiating investigations, responding to medical and fire emergencies, controlling parking and traffic, and enforcing certain local and state laws, as well as rules developed by the College to address campus-related concerns.
