Tampere University of Technology (TUT) merged with the University of Tampere in 2019 to form the new Tampere University. The merger was part of the Tampere3 initiative aimed at combining academic strengths in technology, health, and society.
The Tampere3 initiative, launched in 2014, aimed to merge Tampere University of Technology, the University of Tampere, and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. The goal was to create a multidisciplinary university combining science, technology, and societal studies.
TUT was originally established in 1965 as a branch of Helsinki University of Technology. It gained independence and became a separate university in 1972.
