Temuco Catholic University, established on September 8, 1959, by Bishop Alejandro Menchaca Lira, was the first higher education institution in Chile's Araucanía Region. Initially affiliated with the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, it gained autonomy in 1991 and is now part of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities.
