Tennessee Technological University is a public research university in Cookeville, Tennessee, United States. The university is formerly known as Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, and before that as the University of Dixie, the name under which it was founded as a private institution. Tennessee Technological University History

Tennessee Technological University is rooted in the University of Dixie which was chartered in 1909. It struggled with funding and enrollment, however, and the campus was deeded to the local government. In 1915, the state government assumed control of the campus and chartered the new school as Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. Due to the rural nature of the school, students also worked in the school garden to grow and prepare their own meals. In 1929, the first class graduated with four-year bachelor’s degrees.
