Texas Southern University History

Texas Southern University's history started as East Texas Normal College in 1889 in Cooper by Kentucky native William L. Mayo as a private teacher’s college based on Normal principles. East Texas Normal College relocated to Commerce after its original campus was destroyed in a fire in July 1894. East Texas Normal College was renamed East Texas State College in 1957.
