His two most well-known works are Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies, published in 1971, and Theory and Design in the First Machine Age, published in 1960. In the latter, he examined the many architectural cultures of Los Angeles and divided the city into four ecological models: Autopia, Foothills, The Plains of Id, and Surfurbia.
