The Juilliard School

The Juilliard School is a private performing arts conservatory in New York City. It is widely regarded as one of the world's most prestigious performing arts institutions.

The Juilliard School History

The Juilliard School was founded in 1905 as the Institute of Musical Art. In 1946, it was renamed the Juilliard School of Music and was later renamed the Juilliard School with music, dance, and drama programmes.

The Juilliard School Programs, Courses, and Schools

 The Juilliard School accepts both degree programme applicants and pre-college division students. All applicants who wish to enrol in the Music Advancement Program for the Pre-College Division must perform an audition in person before members of the faculty and administration and must be between the ages of 8 and 18. The Juilliard School offers classes in dance, drama, and music. The Dance Division offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Diploma. Ballet, modern and contemporary dance, and dance studies are all areas of study. The Juilliard School Music Division is the school's largest division. Bachelor of Music or Diploma, Master of Music or Graduate Diploma, Artist Diploma, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees are all available. Brass, collaborative piano, composition, guitar, harp, historical performance, jazz studies, orchestral conducting, organ, percussion, piano, strings, voice, and woodwinds are academic majors.

The Juilliard School Achievements/USP

The Juilliard School's USP/achievements are that it is consistently ranked as one of the top performing arts schools in the world. Since the QS World University Rankings for the subject performing arts were first published in 2016, Juilliard has held the top spot as the best academic institution for performing arts for six years. Only in 2022 did the school drop to third place, trailing the Royal College of Music and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Juilliard received a perfect score of 100 for academic reputation and a 69.2 for employer reputation as part of its ranking criteria for 2022, for an overall score of 93.8. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Juilliard is the "most elite of institutions" and will be the best drama school in the world in 2021. Julliard was ranked fourth in the Hollywood Reporter's 2022 ranking of the world's best music schools.

The Juilliard School infrastructure & services

Campus

The Juilliard School has a campus at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The Juilliard School is housed in the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts' Irene Diamond Building, which runs along Broadway and W 65th Street. The Glorya Kaufman Dance Studio, Stephanie P. McClelland Drama Theater, Harold and Mimi Steinberg Drama Studio, Judith Harris and Tony Woolfson Orchestral Studio, and Edwin and Nancy Marks Jazz Rehearsal Room are all located in the Juilliard building. The Peter Jay Sharp Theater, Paul Recital Hall, and Morse Recital Hall are all recital halls. The Alice Tully Hall, which houses the Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center, is also housed in the building. The Samuel B. & David Rose Building, adjacent to the Juilliard building, houses the school's Meredith Willson Residence Hall, named after composer, conductor, and Juilliard alumnus Meredith Willson. The hall houses student dorms, faculty suites, and visiting artist studios.

Library

Lila Acheson Wallace Library is the name of The Juilliard School's library. The Lila Acheson Wallace Library is a comprehensive resource for the performance and research needs of the School. More than 87,000 music performance and study scores, including scholarly editions of composers' collected works and other historical editions; 27,000 books (both print and e-books) on music, dance, drama, and general academic subjects; 25,000 sound recordings (LPs, compact discs, reel-to-reel, cassette, and DAT tapes); and 3,000 videos are included in the collection.

Housing services

Residential life at the Juilliard School provides housing services. The Meredith Willson Residence Hall is just steps away from the school building, offering a one-of-a-kind opportunity to avoid commuting while enjoying stunning views of Lincoln Center and the Upper West Side. The Meredith Willson Residence Hall also houses the Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Suites and the Susan and Elihu Rose Presidential Suite, which provide apartment-style lodging for faculty members and guests. The Office of Residence Life is comprised of two full-time professional staff members who live in the building and provide emergency response 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, three live-in graduate assistants (GAs) and 11 resident assistants (RAs) assist students and promote a positive residence hall experience.

Medical services

Medical services at the Juilliard School is provided on-site at Health Services on the 22nd floor of the Meredith Willson Residence Hall. The clinic offers free urgent care, sick visits, well-patient visits, and sexual health consultations. In the fall, Health Services provides free flu shots, H.I.V. and S.T.I. (Sexually Transmitted Infections) testing, and immunizations. When necessary, students are referred to off-site specialists from an established network of excellent practitioners representing a wide range of medical specialties.

Students clubs

Student clubs at the Juilliard School provides social, recreational, and professional opportunities for all students. The Juilliard School Student Congress is a democratically elected body of student representatives that collaborates with the administration to maintain and improve student life at Juilliard. The Juilliard Student Congress (JSC) is the student body's representative, advocating for student issues and school improvements. JSC meets monthly to discuss various aspects of student life and meets with senior administration several times per semester. Members are elected on an annual basis to represent each division and various constituency groups (international, commuter, residential, undergraduate, and graduate). Sports and fitness

Frederick P. Rose Fitness Center provides sports and fitness facilities to the Juilliard School. The Fitness Center, located on the 22nd floor of the Rose Building, is open to all faculty, staff, apprentices, and students who show their Juilliard ID and a valid government-issued ID to the Lobbyguard kiosk on the 11th floor of the residence hall. Non-residential members of the Juilliard community can obtain a frequent visitor barcode or key tag from the Office of Residence Life. Seven days a week, the Fitness Center is open. All strength training equipment (Cybex machines) and treadmills are only available from 7 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday.

Health and Well-being 

Students' health and counselling services are provided by the Juilliard School's health and well-being department. Juilliard Counseling Services currently provides both remote and in-person appointments. Juilliard Counseling Services' mission is to provide free psychotherapy to students in order to help them meet their emotional, psychological, and mental health needs. Counseling Services contributes to Julliard’s academic and performance missions by facilitating personal development, self-awareness, problem solving, and communication. Counseling Services fulfill its mission by providing counselling, psychotherapy, consultation, and outreach services. During the academic year, Juilliard Counseling Services has a clinical director and thirteen psychotherapists on staff that is available to student’s onsite at various times throughout the week. It also has a psychiatrist on staffs who works with students who require medication.

Residential Life

The residential life experience at the Juilliard School provides students with a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment that promotes the development of practical life skills and independence. Residents come from all over the world to study in our dance, drama, and music divisions, resulting in a diverse community of artists in which students enjoy making friends, generating new ideas, and collaborating outside of the classroom. Part time jobs

Through the Federal Work-Study (FWS) and Juilliard Work-Study (JWS) programmes, the Juilliard School provides numerous on-campus employment opportunities. Students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States may be eligible for the federally funded FWS programme. Students who do not qualify for FWS may qualify for JWS. Most international students are eligible to work under the JWS programme, but they should check with the Office of International Advisement (OIA) first. Students in both programmes work at the School and are paid hourly. Pay rates typically range from $15.00 to $20.00 per hour and vary depending on level of responsibility, specialized skills required, and other factors. Annual earnings typically range from $1,000 to $3,500.
