Frequently Asked Questions

In 2022, the university changed its name to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) to better reflect its values of inclusivity and diversity, distancing itself from Egerton Ryerson’s controversial role in Canada’s residential school system.
The Toronto Normal School, founded in 1852 by Egerton Ryerson, was one of the earliest institutions for teacher training in Canada. It later played roles in World War II training efforts and post-war re-establishment programs, ultimately leading to the formation of TMU as a modern university.
TMU was first granted the power to award degrees in 1971 when it was known as Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. It became a full-fledged university in 1993 under the name Ryerson Polytechnic University.
