Transylvania University History

Transylvania University was the very first college west of the Allegheny Mountains. It was named after the Colony of Transylvania, Latin for "across the woods," which aimed to educate good citizens. Transylvania University was the first University in Kentucky, which was founded in 1780.

Transylvania University's admissions process is both selective and international. Transylvania University currently offers 46 majors and 37 minors, as well as numerous pre-professional tracks, divided into four divisions: Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Social Sciences. It offers majors such as Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and Writing, Rhetoric, and Communication (WRC), as well as interdisciplinary studies and the option for students to create their own majors.

Transylvania University's USP/Achievements are that the institution is always taking new initiatives for education and students. Transylvania University became the first of Kentucky's liberal arts colleges to establish a Peace Corps Prep programme in 2018, a diversity-focused programme designed to prepare undergraduates for international development fieldwork and potential Peace Corps service. Transylvania University also announced collaboration with Appalachian Regional Healthcare to encourage students from Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia interested in healthcare careers, whether as practitioners or administrators, to attend Transylvania. Students who participate will return to their home regions and communities after graduation to work for ARH. Apart from this, Transylvania University has produced two United States vice presidents, two United States Supreme Court justices, 50 United States senators, 101 United States representatives, 36 United States governors, 34 United States ambassadors, and the Confederate president, making it a major producer of United States statesmen.

Transylvania University infrastructure & services

Campus

Transylvania University is situated on a 48-acre (19.4-hectare) urban campus four blocks from the heart of Lexington, Kentucky. It has 24 structures, three athletic fields, three dining areas, and is a National Historic Landmark. North Broadway divides the campus, with the academic buildings of the university to the east and the majority of the residential buildings to the west.

Library

J. Douglas Gay Jr. /Frances Carrick Thomas Library are the name of Transylvania University's library. The Library is the scholarly heart of Transylvania's campus, housing all of the assistance and resources students require succeeding in their classes. The Transylvania University library's Special Collections department houses a manuscript collection containing letters, diaries, and documents from notable historical figures associated with the university, such as Henry Clay, Jefferson Davis, Robert Peter, John Wesley Hunt, Daniel Drake, and Horace Holley. A collection of books relating to the history of horses and natural history, as well as a collection of pre-1800 medical books, can be found in the rare books section. Transylvania is also a member of the Kentucky Virtual Library, which provides access to electronic databases and catalogues from numerous libraries across the state.

Housing services

Various residence halls at Transylvania University provide housing services. Apartments, residence halls, and other types of housing are available. The majority of the houses include numerous amenities such as: Three of the four floors have common areas with moveable furniture, televisions, and areas for groups to hang out and collaborate. Beds, dressers, closets, desks, chairs, sinks, and a bathroom shared with the room next door are all included in each two-person room. There are also kitchen and laundry facilities.

Medical services

The students' health centre at Transylvania University provides medical services. The Health Services department is on the second floor of the campus centre. From Monday to Friday, a nurse practitioner is on campus to evaluate and treat a wide range of common health issues. Physicals, emergency care for unexpected illnesses or injuries, health education and wellness visits, flu vaccines, some STI lab testing and CLIA waived in office tests, allergy shots, blood pressure checks, and other services are available.

The residential life at Transylvania University is wonderful and lively. Living on campus, whether in a traditional residence hall, an apartment, or one of our suite-style residences, can be a highlight of your Transylvania University experience. Your residence halls are only a few minutes' walk from the classrooms and library. Full-time students must live on campus unless they have reached senior status (27 course units) before the start of the fall term, are 21 years old by the start of the fall term, are married, live with parent(s) or legal guardian, or are carrying an academic load of less than three course units.

Part time jobs

Students at Transylvania University can work part-time and intern while attending classes. Many work-study positions are posted by campus offices on Handshake, the Career Center's online job posting site. Student Safety

In collaboration with safety-conscious students, the university's professionally trained officers in the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and well-qualified residence life staff help ensure that individuals and their belongings are secure. To connect to DPS, simply lift the receiver on any of the over 60 red phones available in buildings or outside locations across campus. Each outdoor emergency phone has a blue light above it that makes it easily visible at night.
