Rudolf Laban, an Austro-Hungarian dancer, choreographer, and dance/movement theorist, established the Laban Dance Centre in Manchester as the Art of Movement Studio. The school relocated to Addlestone, Surrey, in 1958 from Manchester, and subsequently to New Cross, London, in 1975, where it was renamed the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance. It was renamed the Laban Centre London in 1997. The centre changed its name to Laban and relocated to freshly constructed space in Deptford in 2002. Laban Creekside (Deptford) has 13 specially designed dance studios, including a dance library, a smaller studio theatre, the 300-seat Bonnie Bird Theatre, and eight with ballet barres. There are also other studios and performance labs at Laban Laurie Grove (New Cross).
