In addition to requiring a secondary education certificate and English competence (IELTS 6.0/TOEFL 60/PTE 55), undergraduate applicants to Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS) frequently take part in an online interview. Online applications are accepted, usually in January for fall admission, and must meet a minimal academic standard (e.g., 50% or 3.0 GPA). Students from non-EU/EEA countries are required to obtain health insurance and pay tuition.

The university strengthened its ICT and cybersecurity education and research activities, responding to increasing global demand for digital expertise.

Turku UAS began participating in advanced 5G research projects aimed at improving maritime digital operations and hybrid communication systems, supporting Finland’s smart shipping ecosystem.
The university strengthened its ICT and cybersecurity education and research activities, responding to increasing global demand for digital expertise.
Turku UAS launched major applied research initiatives in autonomous and smart systems, including projects focused on digitalisation, AI, and maritime technologies, enhancing industry collaboration.
By 2017, Turku UAS had significantly expanded its English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes, strengthening its position as an internationally oriented university of applied sciences in Finland.
Turku UAS introduced its Innovation Pedagogy model in 2006 to integrate education, research, and working-life collaboration. This approach strengthened students’ innovation skills and became a defining educational strategy of the university.
Turku UAS collaborated with Novia University of Applied Sciences to build a test and RDI platform for autonomous, remotely operated and automated systems, especially for maritime logistics and smart environments. This project ran from 1 Oct 2020 to 31 Dec 2023, funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. It delivered digital services, simulation environments and data platforms supporting autonomous system testing. Turku UAS developed its innovation pedagogy approach Innopeda beginning in 2006 to integrate teaching, learning and innovation in curricula. Over the years the approach has been published and refined through RDI publications in 2011, 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2021, supporting competence development and innovation skills in students and staff.
This 2-year RDI project (from 1 Mar 2023 to 28 Feb 2025), co-funded by Business Finland and Turku UAS with Åbo Akademi, aims to develop roadmaps and solutions for 5G-Advanced connectivity in maritime digitalisation to support future ship operations and hybrid network solutions.
Turku UAS significantly expanded its research funding: in 2024 it received €12.48 million in external RDI funding, an ~18 % increase over 2023, enabling more industry partnerships and applied solutions, including sustainable shipbuilding and other innovation developments.
