Union University

Union University is a private evangelical Christian university with campuses in Jackson, Germantown, and Hendersonville. Union University is associated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention.

Union University History

Jackson Male Academy was established in 1823, shortly after West Tennessee was made available for settlement. The land was purchased from the Chickasaw Indians only five years before, in 1818. Dr. T.T. Eaton, a trustee of Southwestern Baptist University, bequeathed his 6,000-volume library to the college in 1907. Eaton was a former professor at Murfreesboro's Union University, where his father, Dr. Joseph H. Eaton, was a former president. Southwestern soon changed its name to Union University in honor of the Eatons and other Union at Murfreesboro faculty, administrators, trustees, and contributors.
