University of Abertay Dundee, formerly known as the University of Abertay Dundee, is among the city of Dundee's two public universities.
University of Abertay Dundee History
The history of the University of Abertay Dundee dates back to 1872, when Sir David Baxter, 1st Baronet of Kilmaron, left a bequest for the founding of a mechanics' institute in Dundee, which became the Dundee Institute of Technology in 1888. The Scottish Education Department recognized it as an educational hub in 1902, and it was one of the first to be certified as a central institution, similar to an "industrial university."
University of Abertay Dundee was founded in 1994 when the Dundee Institute of Technology was given the title "University of Abertay Dundee" by government legislation. On September 1, 2019, an Order of Council legally changed the university's name to University of Abertay Dundee.
