Founded in 1831, the University of Alabama is a public research university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States of America. It is one of the oldest and largest universities in Alabama. The university has the only publicly supported law school in the state. Other programs unavailable in the state include doctoral programs in anthropology, communication and information sciences, metallurgical engineering, music and social work.

The University of Alabama comprises of 13 schools and colleges such as College of Arts & Sciences, College of Community Health Sciences, College of Continuing Studies, Culverhouse, College of Commerce, College of Education, College of Engineering, Graduate School, Honors College, College of Human Environmental Sciences Law School, Capstone College of Nursing, School of Social Work. The university has two research centers: The Alabama International Trade Center and the Center for Advanced Public Safety. The students are granted free admission to all four museums located on campus, including the Alabama Museum of Natural History, and the Emerging Scholars program allows students to participate in research with faculty members.

The dual MSCivE/JD program is offered collaboratively with the Law School. It allows students to double count 12 credit hours of approved graduate civil engineering coursework from the MSCivE towards the JD and 12 credit hours of approved law coursework from the JD towards the MSCivE.

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics (AEM) Honors Program is part of the College of Engineering Honors Program (COEHP). It is designed to challenge exceptionally talented students with an enriched educational experience. Students completing the AEM Honors Program will be awarded a certificate and recognized at the Honors Day ceremony in the student's senior year.

A unique facet of the AAST program is its commitment to scholarship on and service to Alabama African American communities, particularly the concerns of African-descended communities from Holt and the west side of Tuscaloosa to the Black Belt areas of Marion, Uniontown, Greensboro, Tuskegee, Selma and Gee's Bend. The program places emphasis on developing students' understanding of interdisciplinary research and its centrality in African American Studies.
