UAB's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office provides extensive advising and workshops on post-graduation work options. This includes detailed guidance on applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows students to work in their field of study for up to 12 months (or 36 months for STEM fields) after completing their degree.
You are eligible to apply for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date and no later than 60 days after your program end date. However, ISSS strongly recommends applying as early as possible (90 days before completion) due to lengthy U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) processing times. You must have a recommendation from ISSS before filing your application with USCIS.
Yes, as long as you timely file your OPT application with USCIS and it is received before your program end date, you are permitted to remain in the U.S. while the application is pending. You can work after your OPT is approved and you have received your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card.
