University of Bridgeport History

The University of Bridgeport was founded in 1927 as Connecticut's first junior college. E. Everett Cortright, Alfred Fones, and Sumner Simpson saw a need in Bridgeport, which at the time was one of only six American cities with a population of more than 100,000 people without a college or university. The school grew significantly, adding dormitories and a business school. The former P. T. Barnum estate and neighbouring property adjacent to Seaside Park were purchased by the school, which became a four-year institution in 1947 and was renamed the University of Bridgeport.
