University History

In 2005 University of British Columbia Okanagan was founded. The campus is spread across 516-acre of land. The university campus is the research and innovation hub in the southern interior of the province of Canada. Initially, the place was used by Okanagan University College which was founded in 1989. As of December 2019, University of British Columbia Okanagan is listed on the UBC Board of Governors by John Klironomos and Nicole Udzenija.

University infrastructure & services

Campus-

The University of British Columbia's Okanagan Campus is located on a hill between Glenmore and Ellison in Kelowna. The campus includes Upper Campus, Lower Campus, Innovation Precinct, and Endowment Lands.

Lower and Upper Campuses are located around the Courtyard Most institutional and administrative buildings are located on the Lower Campus, which also includes UBC Okanagan Library, Learning Commons and the Transit Exchange. The Upper Campus consists of on-campus student housing and some institutional, childcare, and recreational buildings as well.

The Charles E. Fipke Center for Innovative Research (FIP) is a multi-purpose academic and research facility, including research labs, classrooms and teaching labs, offices, student commons, lecture theater, and an animal care facility. 

The Learning Commons Building, also known as The Commons, started by the end of 2018 as a part of the UBC Okanagan Library which contains study spaces, media labs, special collections and archives databases. 

The Innovation Precinct is spread across 60-acres of land located beside Innovation Drive. Most of the land is covered with a parking lot, and two industrial buildings which are used for collaborative research between the university and external organizations.

Libraries-

Library at University of British Columbia Okanagan is an important part of the educational experience and an invaluable resource for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, but also for the broad community. The library offers 7.8 million items, 2.3 million ebooks, 2,495 indexes and databases, 313,000 e-journals and services to support academic studies and enhance research work at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. University library is focused to provide high-quality library resources, programs, and services to the students. The library provides flexible and well-equipped surroundings for everyone's research and learning needs. On-campus- University of British Columbia Okanagan’s Student housing and Residence Life offers residential communities, where students from all over the country and the world live, learn and grow together. The different places to reside on the university campus are- Assiar, Kalamalka, Nicola, Purcell, Valhalla, Skeena and Nechako residences, Lower/Upper Cascades, Similkameen Place and Monashee Place. Students have an option to reside in the residence halls. The University of British Columbia Okanagan’s residential halls, private rooms and townhouses offer support and convenience, as well as opportunities for personal growth, cultural exploration, and interaction with all facilities and staff. As an international student, you will need to have specific permits and visas to study in Canada.

Initial Study Permit

All University of British Columbia Okanagan students need to have legal status in Canada, and you will need to present your status documents to get your student card. If this is your first time applying for a study permit, you can do it at the nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. You can apply for your permit as soon as you receive your Offer of Admission from the University of Toronto and decide to accept. Because the permit legally entitles you to study in Canada, you will need it before you enter the country.

Temporary Resident Visa
