University of British Columbia Okanagan History

University of British Columbia Okanagan also known as UBCO was established in the year in 1989 at Okanagan University College in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The college initially used to award degrees in partnership with other universities in the region but it subsequently came under the control of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver in the year 2005. The university now serves as a hub of education, research, and innovation in interior areas of British Columbia.

University of British Columbia offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level degrees at Kelowna campus. There are 63 undergraduate programs in Education, Engineering, Arts, Human Kinetics, Management, Medicine, Nursing, Media and Science. Postgraduate and Doctoral level programs are offered in Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, English, Education, Fine Arts, Management, Mathematics, Nursing, and Social Work.

The university also offers various research options at the campus through its 15 research centers and 505 faculty members in the fields of global importance. The research is highly collaborative and specializes in human protection and performance in remote or rural conditions.

University of British Columbia campus is spread over the area of 209 hectares in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. The campus underwent a CAD 450 million expansion in 2011 creating new spaces for various faculties. The campus has a dedicated university center which houses the UBC students union, meeting rooms, student clubs, cafe, restaurants, cinema, prayer rooms, learning centers, and a medical clinic.

The Charles E. Fipke Centre for Innovative Research houses classrooms, lecture theatres, research labs, offices, and student spaces spread over 75,000 square feet. The Okanagan campus also boasts of an impressive library, student residences, and an under-construction CAD 40 million teachings and learning center to expand the current library.

The research funding of the university increased from CAD 1.1 million in 2005 to CAD 14.7 million in 2015. The university is considered at forefront of technological advancements and research projects with over 714 projects carried out in 2015 alone.

The university graduates are also highly sought after in the job market and often go on to work in the leading companies and attain prestigious positions in the government of British Columbia and Canada.
