While UChicago does not offer official post-study work visas, international students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT is a temporary work authorization that allows F-1 students to work in the US after completing their degree program.
Employment during OPT must: Be related to the student’s field of study. Be commensurate with the level of study. Not interfere with the student's full course load during the academic year. Students are allowed to work full-time during breaks and vacation quarters, and up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session.
To be eligible for OPT, students must: Be a full-time student in a degree program for at least one academic year. Have valid F-1 student status at the time of application. Not have used 12 months of OPT for a previous degree at the same level or at a higher-degree level.
