A post-study work visa allows international students to remain in the U.S. after graduation to work in their field of study. The most common post-study work visa for students is the Optional Practical Training (OPT), which gives students a chance to gain practical experience in the U.S.
Graduates can apply for the OPT visa by submitting an application to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The application process includes obtaining a recommendation from the university’s international student office and filing the necessary paperwork with USCIS.
The OPT visa allows students to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months after graduation. Students who have completed a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degree may be eligible for an additional 24-month extension.
You do not need a job offer to apply for OPT. However, once you are granted OPT, you must find a job related to your degree within 90 days to maintain your status.
