University of Crete History

The University of Crete also known as UoC is a research university located in Rethymnon and Heraklion on the island of Crete in Greece. The university was established in 1973 and started functioning in the year 1977. The university currently enrolls 18,000 plus students and employs over 900 staff.

University of Crete Programs, Courses, and Schools

The University of Crete comprises of sixteen departments grouped into five schools across two campuses. The Rethymnon campus offers programs across Department of Psychology, Department of Primary Education, Department of Preschool Education, Department of Economics, Department of Political Science, Department of Philology, Department of History and Archaeology, Department of Philosophy and Social Studies, and Department of Sociology.

University of Crete’s Heraklion campus offers degrees and diplomas in departments such as Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Medicine, Department of Chemistry, Department of Materials Science and Technology, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Biology.

University of Crete Campuses

The University of Crete has two campuses located on the Greek Island of Crete. The first one is Galos located in Rethymnon and second is Voutes in Heraklion. Both towns are located in the north coast of the island offering the students a warm climate and endless opportunities to explore the Greek coastline and culture in addition to historic sites.

University of Crete University Library offers students access to millions of books, journals, periodicals, and volumes in both print and digital formats. The university also offers state-of-the-art lecture theatres, classrooms, laboratories, IT infrastructure in addition to sports, shopping, and dining facilities.

The University of Crete ranks 1st in Greece, 174th in Europe and top 400 worldwide by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings of 2019. The university is also highly ranked for its Clinical Health, Life Sciences, Computer Science, Psychology, and Engineering programs by THE.

The University of Crete is ranked 76th worldwide by THE Young University Rankings and 51st in 2019 THE Emerging Economies University Rankings. The university is also rated high as per its citation rate and research output by Times Higher Education.

University of Crete USP

The University of Crete is internationally known for its programs in Arts and collaborates with FORTH (Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas). The university also owns The Natural History Museum of Crete established in 1981.

The University of Crete has an average acceptance rate and accepts students on the basis of an entrance test. The university also offers a lower cost of living and tuition fee than cities like Athens in addition to numerous study abroad and student exchange programs.
