University of Erlangen Nuremberg History

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg also known as Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg or FAU is a public research university based in Erlangen and Nuremberg in Bavaria, Germany. The university was established in 1742 in the town of Bayreuth by Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. The university was moved to Erlangen in 1743. 1961 saw the merger of a business college followed by the inauguration of engineering school in 1966. School of Education merged with the university in 1972.

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programs across 5 faculties. These faculties include the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology, Faculty of Business, Economics, and Law, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Sciences, and Faculty of Engineering.

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg is also home to various research centers such as New Materials and Processes, Optics and Optical Technologies, Molecular Life Science and Medicine, Health Technology, Electronics, Information and Communication, Energy, Environment and Climate, and Language, Culture, and Region. These centers cater to the research and academic community at the university.

University of Erlangen Nuremberg Campuses

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg has three campuses, two in Erlangen and one in Nuremberg. Both the campuses are highly accessible by regional and superfast ICE trains. The university library comprises of over 5.4 million volumes making it the largest library in the state of Bavaria outside Munich. The university also recently purchased 4.4 hectares of land in Erlangen previously owned by the US military renaming it to Rothelheim Campus.

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg also has its own hospital which houses the faculty of Medicine. The university also provides halls of residence for students as well as various shopping, leisure, and recreational activities for students.

University of Erlangen Nuremberg Achievements

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg is one of the handfuls of universities and first in Germany to open its overseas campus in Busan, South Korea. The university campus in Busan offers a program in Chemical and Bioengineering and a research center. The university is currently working with various companies and universities in South Korea to convert the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone into an educational hub.

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg was declared as winner in the German Universities Excellence Initiative by German Research Foundation. The university’s Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences department was ranked 2nd in Germany by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

University of Erlangen Nuremberg USP

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg supports exceptional students through its FAU Germany Scholarship. The university awards up to EUR 3600 each year to academically brilliant students. Many other grants and bursaries are also available which is performance-based. The tuition fee, however, is low.

The University of Erlangen Nuremberg is and has been home to researchers and professors of high repute. The university has also produced numerous Nobel Prize Laureates and persons holding prominent positions in the government, sciences, arts, and business. Owing to its reputation, the acceptance rate is just 50%.
