The University of Freiburg is located in Breisgau, Germany. It was established in the year 1457, and it is the 5th oldest university in Austrian- Habsburg territory after the University of Vienna. The university has a long tradition of teaching humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

The present university library is a monumental building built in the 1970s. It was to be renovated and re-designed starting in September 2008.
