University of Ghana History

The University of Ghana is a public university located to the northeast of Accra, the capital of Ghana. The university was founded in the year 1948 as The University College of the Gold Coast, an affiliated college of the University of London. In the year 1961, it got named as The University of Ghana is now the oldest and largest universities in the country.

University of Ghana Programs, Courses, and Schools

The University of Ghana has 6 schools, 4 colleges, and 1 research institute with more than 40,000 students. The university has research and learning centers which are divided into 6 teams. The collegiate system is divided into 4 colleges such as The College of Basic and Applied Sciences, The College of Education, The College of Health Sciences, and The College of Humanities.

The University of Ghana offers courses at the undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. level for national and international students with subjects ranging from Animal Science, Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, Psychology, Population, Family and Reproduction Health, Marine and Fisheries Sciences, Music, Health Policy, and Planning and Management. The university also offers distance education options for students.

University of Ghana Campuses

The University of Ghana has 10 private hostels where safety and comfort are taken care of. They have a separate guest house named SSNIT Hostel for visiting faculties and other professors. The university also provides free space for student’s recreational activities. Standard Chartered Bank, Barclays Bank, HFC Bank, and many other well- known banks have their branches on the campus.

The University of Ghana has a range of buildings housing several faculties which conduct academic, as well as non-academic programs, take place. The university provides exposure to students by organizing field trips and social events. The university campus also has an on-campus post office

The University of Ghana is a prime member of the League of World Universities which puts it at forefront of research and development activities. The university ranks first among the 13 other universities in Ghana.

The University of Ghana is ranked 17th in Africa by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The university ranks 801-1000 in the QS World University Rankings.
