Experience Exceptional Student Facilities & Services at University of Gothenburg

The University of Gothenburg is in the midst of a unique development phase, constructing new buildings and remodelling existing premises to support the research and education of the future. Its premises are primarily located within five university campuses in central Gothenburg: Haga, Rosenlund, Vasa, Näckrosen in Lorensberg, and Medicinareberget. A key project is the construction of a new 10,000 square metre, eight-storey building for the School of Business, Economics and Law, which will feature a new main entrance, two lecture halls, student service, workstations, and a café. Another major project is the new building for the Artistic Faculty at Campus Näckrosen (Konstnärliga), which will house the entire range of artistic education and research in a state-of-the-art, central facility. These developments contribute to the university's goal of creating a physical learning environment at the international forefront and integrating the university more closely with the city's urban life.

Student Support

The University of Gothenburg provides a comprehensive support system for its students through its Servicecenter and Student Portal. The Servicecenter serves as a central point of contact, offering help with everything from academic transcripts and student account support to GU cards and study counselling. The university also provides dedicated support for students with disabilities, with approximately 2,000 students receiving tailored adjustments to their studies. For those facing academic challenges, students can turn to student and doctoral student ombudsmen, who provide confidential support in matters related to disciplinary issues, discrimination, and sexual harassment. Additionally, the university offers study support for students going abroad and has a library that provides resources and guidance on study techniques and research.

Student Life

Student life at the University of Gothenburg is vibrant and diverse, largely organized through the four main student unions: Göta Student's Union, the School of Business, Economics and Law Student Union, Sahlgrenska Academy Student Union, and KonstKåren Student Union for the Artistic Faculty. These unions organize a wide range of activities, from welcome weeks and orientation events (known as nollning or inspark) to parties, games, sports, and dinners. There are also numerous student associations focused on everything from singing and dancing to specific academic interests. Beyond the university, Gothenburg itself is a student-friendly city with a thriving café culture, easy access to stunning nature, and a location that puts students right at the center of the city's vibrant life, with parks like Slottsskogen just around the corner for relaxation and recreation.

Housing facilities (Accommodation)

The University of Gothenburg offers a limited number of student rooms and apartments through its Academic Housing service, primarily for exchange students and fee-paying students. These residences are located in central, eastern, and western Gothenburg, all within walking distance or easily accessible by public transport to the city centre. The university also provides temporary guest apartments for international researchers, doctoral students, and staff. However, it is important to note that the University does not guarantee housing, and there is a well-known shortage of housing in Gothenburg, particularly for the autumn semester. Students are strongly advised to start their housing search early and consider the private market, as the university's own supply is limited.

Student Safety

The University of Gothenburg is committed to providing a safe and secure study environment for all students, which should be accessible and free from all forms of discrimination and harassment. The university provides clear information on safety protocols, including emergency contacts (dial 112), fire precautions, and access to premises using a personal GU card and PIN code. Students are also expected to take personal responsibility for their safety, such as keeping an eye on their belongings and not lending their GU card to anyone. Any incidents, including theft, threats, violence, or harassment, must be reported to the police and through the university's IA system to help the university take preventive measures. Students have the right to be treated with respect, and the university actively works to prevent victimisation and ensure a safe environment.

Career Support

The University of Gothenburg provides career support primarily through its Career Service, which organises job fairs and connects students with potential employers. The alumni network plays a key role in career development, with alumni able to serve as mentors, guest lecturers, and provide professional networking opportunities. Upon graduation, students are welcomed into the global alumni network, which is based in over 80 countries and offers access to job vacancies, events, and lectures. The university also has a job posting portal where employers can post internships, thesis projects, and job vacancies. For those seeking to work at the university itself, a recruitment portal lists all available positions. Career support includes guidance on the transition from academia to industry and workshops to develop job-seeking skills.
