OPT is a benefit that allows international students to work in the U.S. after graduation. To be eligible, a student must have maintained their F-1 immigration status for at least one full academic year and be on track to complete all degree requirements. Employment during OPT must be directly related to the student’s major area of study.
Students are eligible for a 12-month period of OPT for each higher education level they complete. Applications for OPT can be submitted up to 90 days before the expected program completion date and must be received by USCIS no later than 60 days after the completion of the academic program requirements.
