The university was established by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation in 1951 and currently enrols over 16000 students.

UIBE is a multidisciplinary university focusing mainly on economics, management, law, literature, and science, with a strong emphasis on international business and trade.
Key milestones include becoming Beijing Foreign Trade College in 1953, merging with the foreign trade major from Renmin University in 1954, renaming to UIBE in 1984, merging with China Finance Institute in 2000, and becoming a national key university jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Commerce in 2010.
