University of Ioannina History

The University of Ioannina also known as UoI is a Greek university located in the town of Ioannina. The university was established in 1964 under the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki charter and was conferred university status in the year 1970. The university currently enrolls 25,000 students and employs over 600 staff.

University of Ioannina Programs, Courses, and Schools

The University of Ioannina comprises of fifteen departments divided amongst seven schools offering a wide range of programs at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level. Some of the subjects on offer are Philosophy, History, Archaeology, Philology, Education, Psychology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, and Health Sciences.

The University of Ioannina also offers programs in Biological Applications, Computer Science Engineering, Material Science, Primary School Education, Economics, Fine Arts, Plastic Arts, Social Sciences, and Pre-School Education to name a few.

University of Ioannina campus is located 5 kilometers from the city centre of Ioannina in Greece. The university library and information centre is spread over an area of 14,500 square meters and is the largest library in the country. The library houses over 500 reading stations, 120 seat auditorium, an Art Gallery, Seminar Rooms, and 31 workstations.

The University of Ioannina also offers a wide range of services such as sports grounds and courts, student union and clubs, laboratories and research centres, classrooms and lecture theatres, health centre, and counseling services to name a few.

The University of Ioannina is ranked 2nd in Greece by the Leiden Rankings of 2017 and top 600 universities in the world by Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The university’s department of Physics is placed 2nd, Chemistry at 4th and Material Science at 3rd in the country by Scientometrics.

The University of Ioannina also received a positive evaluation by an external evaluation committee in the year 2015. The Greek Hellenic Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency (HQAA) also highly rates the university in many of its subjects.
