The University of Iowa (UI) is a research based public university located in Iowa City, Iowa. The university was established in 1847 which makes it the oldest university in the state. The university is the second largest university of the state. The university is classified as R1 Doctoral Universities in very high research activity. UI was the first university in the United States to become a Coeducational medical school and to host a department of religious studies.

The University of Iowa was established on 25 February, 1847. The legal name of the university is the State University of Iowa. The constitution of the state university said to establish a university in Iowa City with no other branches at any other places. The UI was the first state university to recognize the LGBTQ+ community in 1970 and it was the first university to use television in education in 1932. The UI is a pioneer in the field of standardized testing.

The main campus of the University of Iowa is located in Iowa City in between Park Road and U.S. Highway to the north and Dubuque and Gilbert streets to the east. The Iowa River flows through the campus. The university has a Pentacrest in the center of the campus which has 5 buildings; Old Capitol, Schaeffer Hall, McLean Hall, Macbride Hall and Jessup Hall. The Pentacrest is built in Greek revival architectural style and the Collegiate Gothic architecture. The Old Capitol earlier was the state legislature and the primary government building for the State of Iowa. The campus has 6 residence buildings; Burge, Daum, Stanley, Currier, Mayflower and Catlett in the east side. The campus also has some museums that include University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural History, the Old Capitol Museum, the Medical Museum, the Athletic Hall of Fame Museum and Project Art at the University Hospitals and Clinics.

The Library system of the University of Iowa is the state’s largest library. It contains the main library, Hardin library for the Health Sciences, five branch libraries and the Law Library. The main library of the UI has more than 5 million bound volumes, more than 20,000 rare books and more than 1000 historical manuscripts. Other significant collections of the library system are the Hardin Library’s John Martin Rare Book Room, the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, science fiction collection and works of Walt Whitman. The comic books collection of the university has original art of more than 6,000 cartoons, films and television scripts.

The University of Iowa has 22 varsity athletic teams of basketball, volleyball, baseball, hockey and golf etc. The Men’s wrestling team is the most successful team of the university which has won over 24 NCAA championships. The Football team has won 11 Big Ten Championships.

1. A Donald Sexton Engineering Scholarship

The A. Donald Sexton Engineering Scholarship is awarded to deserving undergraduate students pursuing mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering at University of Iowa.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines:
To be eligible, an applicant:

- Should be a deserving undergraduate students pursuing mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering at the university.
- Should be a Iowa resident 
- Should be in the second through fourth year of their undergraduate education
- Should have either completed an internship or worked for an Iowa-based company to enhance their engineering education.
