The University of Lorraine is a public university located in Nancy, France. It was established in the year 1572 by Charles III, Duke of Lorraine, and Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine. The University of Lorraine is a merger of Nancy University and Paul Verlaine University.

The University has 6 libraries which are based in Metz, Thionville-Yutz, Sarreguemines and in Saint- Avold which has 280,000 books, 880 volumes, and 26,650 online journals.

The University of Lorraine obtained, on February 10, 2017, the "HR Excellence in Research" label from the European Commission after examining its European strategy for human resources for researchers.
