The University of Magallanes was established in 1981. It is a public university in Punta Arenas, Chile, and the successor to the Technical University of the State's Punta Arenas campus. It is the principal higher education institution in Chilean Patagonia, with campuses in Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, Porvenir, Puerto Williams, and Coyhaique.

Between 2015 and 2016, UMAG's Center for Energy Resource Studies (CERE) led a multidisciplinary research project to establish a distinct time zone for the Magallanes region. This effort resulted in the adoption of the "Hora de Magallanes" in 2017, aligning regional timekeeping with local needs. ​
