The university is a liberal arts university that was founded in the year 1908. The university in the beginning started as the Fredericksburg Teachers College and then in 1938, it was named Mary Ball Washington. In 1944, the university admitted women candidates in their undergraduate programs. In 1970, the university got recognised as a co-educational institute after being accepted by the Virginia General Assembly. In 2004, the university was finally given the name University of Mary Washington. Recently, the university got added to the Princeton Review for being one of the best colleges.
