CardSleuth – Portable Device for Identity Theft Detection

In collaboration with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, UNLV’s School of Informatics developed CardSleuth, a portable device capable of detecting stolen magnetic stripe data—commonly found on hotel keycards and casino player cards. A provisional patent was filed in 2005, and the initiative expanded to include multi-factor credential technologies incorporating biometrics, encryption, holograms, and digital imaging.

Fungal Mold Detection via PCR Method

UNLV researchers, including Cruz and Mark Buttner, developed a PCR-based testing method to rapidly detect the mold Stachybotrys chartarum from environmental samples—no culture growth required. They also pursued a similar detection method for Aspergillus fumigatus, which poses serious infection risks for immunocompromised individuals. The project has been patented and is available for licensing.
