University of North Florida (UNF) is a public research university which is situated in Jacksonville, Florida. It is part of the Florida State University System.

University of North Florida History

The University of North Florida was founded in 1965, and classes began in 1972. Initially, the University of North Florida was designated as an upper division college for juniors and seniors. It first admitted freshmen in 1984.

The University of North Florida's USP/Achievements include being accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, and doctorate degrees. It falls under the category of "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity." U.S. News & World Report ranked UNF 272nd among national universities and 136th among public universities in 2021. UNF is ranked 48th in the nation for best online bachelor's programmes. For the past 12 years, Military Friendly has named UNF one of the most military-friendly schools, exceeding their standards in all rated areas; nearly 1,400 veterans and military-affiliated students attend UNF, accounting for approximately 8% of all students. For the sixth time, UNF received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine in 2020.

University of North Florida infrastructure & services

Campus

The University of North Florida campus spans 1,300 acres on Jacksonville's Southside, surrounded by a natural preserve. The University of North Florida's campus is near the junction of I-295 (East Beltway) and SR-202 (J. Turner Butler Boulevard), two major expressways in the Jacksonville area. On campus, UNF has 28 major buildings and six housing facilities. Many of the structures are named after people who have made significant contributions to the university. The Coggin College of Business, the John E. Mathews, Jr. Computer and Information Sciences Building, and J. J. Daniel Hall are among these structures. Furthermore, the library is named after the university's first president, Thomas G. Carpenter. The Green is a popular student hangout in the centre of campus.

Library

Thomas G. Carpenter Library is the name of the library at the University of North Florida. The Thomas G. Carpenter Library, also known as Building 12, is named after Thomas G. Carpenter, the university's first president. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 8, 1978, and was completed on October 1, 1980. Construction on a four-story addition to the library began in May 2004. This addition added 79,000 square feet (7,300 m2) and increased the library's capacity from 800 to 2,000, bringing the total size to 199,000 square feet (18,500 m2). The new addition, which cost $22.5 million, opened in December 2005. There are 328 public workstations, 18 group study rooms, 37 carrels, 19 faculty, 25 support staff, over 1.4 million microform units, 800 videos, 13,000 electronic journals, 52,000 electronic books, and over 840,000 volumes in the library. Off campus, students, faculty, and staff can access electronic resources. Free wireless Internet access is available throughout the building, and enrolled students can borrow laptop computers.

Housing services

Residential and housing services are provided by the University of North Florida. The University of North Florida has seven on-campus housing areas: Osprey Cove, Osprey Crossings, Osprey Hall, Osprey Landing, Osprey Village, Osprey Fountains, and The Flats at UNF. Cove, Crossings, and Landing all have similar suite/efficiency-style rooms; each is designed for triple occupancy and houses two to three residents, with some accommodating individual rooms for disabled students. Hall provides a more traditional, dorm-like environment, with double-occupancy rooms and shared bathrooms and showers. The Village and The Flats have an apartment-like feel with multiple-occupancy accommodations. Freshmen live in Cove, Crossings, Hall, and Landing, while upperclassmen live in Village, Fountains, and The Flats.

Medical services

On-campus medical services are provided by the University of North Florida. Your health clinic is Student Health Services. The assessed fees, which are funded by student fees and are aligned with the Brooks College of Health, fund credentialed medical and nursing professionals to administratively manage and staff the 10-bed health clinic, treatment room, CLIA waived laboratory and radiology unit, supplies, personal protective equipment, overhead, and technology.

Students clubs

The University of North Florida offers over 200 student clubs and organisations, as well as an active student government and Greek life. The Spinnaker, a student-run publication, is published monthly. The university's intercollegiate athletic teams are known as the Ospreys, and they compete in NCAA Division I as members of the ASUN Conference.

The University of North Florida has a single campus in Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville is a city in northeast Florida on the Atlantic coast. It is the most populous city proper in the state and, as of 2020, the largest city by area in the contiguous United States.

Jacksonville has a humid subtropical climate, with hot humid summers and warm to mild and drier winters, according to the Köppen climate classification. The wettest months are May through September, when brief but intense downpours with thunder and lightning are common, while the driest months are November through April. The annual rainfall is approximately 52 inches (1.3 m).

For passenger and freight transportation, the Jacksonville transportation network includes ground, air, and sea options. The Port of Jacksonville is operated by the Jacksonville Port Authority (Jaxport), which includes container shipping facilities at Blount Island Marine Terminal, Talleyrand Marine Terminal, and Dames Point Marine Terminal. Jacksonville Aviation Authority is in charge of Jacksonville International Airport, as well as several smaller airports.

Sports and fitness

The recreation and wellness centre at the University of North Florida provides sports and fitness facilities. RecWell, or the Department of Recreation and Wellness, covers approximately 230 acres of the University of North Florida campus and is divided into the following units: Aquatics, Fitness, Competitive Sports, Eco Adventure, Wellness, and Youth Programs Compliance. Across these units, we employ nearly 20 full-time professional staff members and approximately 200 student employees.

Part time jobs

On-campus employment at the University of North Florida must be performed on school grounds (including on-campus commercial firms that provide services to students on campus, such as the school bookstore or cafeteria) or at an off-campus location that is educationally affiliated with the school. Employment with on-campus commercial firms that do not provide direct student services, such as a construction company building a school building, is not considered on-campus employment. During each academic term, you may work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) and full-time when school is not in session (summer holidays and official school holidays).
